Two beetle species in amber

Both beetles (Order Coleoptera) date from ~20-25 million years ago and were both found in Dominican amber. There is an enormous diversity of beetle species, past and present, and so they are not infrequent in amber, especially the smaller types. Because of the great number of species, taxonomy is difficult, especially when features are hidden or degraded by the amber, and identity of these two inclusions is a less-than-educated guess. The topmost beetle has resemblance to a wrinkled bark beetle due to the appearance of the antennae and the grooved pronotum. The lower beetle resembles a marsh beetle (family Helodidae), again based on antennae and on distinctive shape. Note that both beetles exhibit lustrous, metallic-like cuticular structure. Approximate magnifications: upper beetle x5; lower beetle x 10.
