FOSSIL MITE IN BALTIC AMBER

A strangely-crafted alien spacecraft hovering above an abstract metallic landscape? Well, afraid not, but in reality it is a very small mite (magnified ca. 20X) embedded in Baltic amber that has been illuminated in such a way as to sharply enhance surface contours and edge detail in the resin matrix. Arthropods such as ticks and mites are not actually scarce in amber, since they were probably quite abundant around trees and foliage during the times in which amber resins were produced, but must be carefully looked-for under magnification. Mites (order Acarina) can exist as either free-living inhabitants of soil and plant matter or as parasites of other organisms such as insects, birds, and mammals. The example shown here has not been classified to date (I know very little of mites) and its identity is unknown. Any ideas?
